SANDSTONE RESTORATION

The fast and easy way to clean sandstone is with HD Acid. 2:1 to 3:1. Brushed on a prewet surface and pressure rinsed off. The best way to clean sandstone is to prewet and apply Stripper Cream. Allow a 24 hour-soak and then pressure rinse with 2000 PSI to 3000 PSI with a 25° to 40° nozzle. It is a bad idea to get into the face of the stone with the pressure washer as this usually creates an orange stain on the face of the newly uncovered stone.

Cleaning stone with a caustic leaves an excellent stone appearance that is completely natural and very attractive. It is also time consuming and more expensive. An acid neutralization may be needed and for that we recommend cut GSR. Dilutions will be determined by testing. For restoration and preservation this is the best. Recently we have seen several examples of an alternative cleaning process for Cleveland Sandstone, which had a tendency to turn orange in the restoration process.

An initial application of SafeRestore followed in a double soap system by GSR will clean the stone but not create the orange stains. If orange stains are created a strong phosphoric acid solution like Concrete Truck Cleaner applied after prewetting and given plenty of dwell time before garden hose rinsing will reduce the staining.
